Día de los Muertos is back at Confluence Center!

This fall, we’re once again opening the doors of Confluence Center to celebrate Día de los Muertos with our neighbors in Missoula. This celebration is led and created by a committee of Latine community members who are helping shape the traditions, activities, and experience throughout the event. 

Día de los Muertos is a Mexican tradition that honors and remembers loved ones who have died. Families and communities create ofrendas, or altars, with photographs, flowers, food, and other meaningful items to remember those who came before us. Our celebration offers an open door to experience Latine culture, share in community, and learn about the traditions behind Día de los Muertos.

There are lots of ways to take part, from making decorations and contributing to the community altar to joining us for the November 1 celebration:

Event calendar: 

October 2 – First Friday opening reception for Entre Dos Mundos: “Between Two Worlds” presented by Torrents: Art on Main Street. 

October 15 — Dia de los Muertos Kids’ Art Making Day at Zootown Arts Community Center: Learn more and register here. 
Join the ZACC for a special Día de los Muertos workshop exploring the art and traditions behind papel picado and tissue paper flowers. Guided by a family from Manzanillo, Colima, and a first-generation Mexican American with Oaxacan roots, kids will learn how to make these colorful decorations while hearing about their history and symbolism. Many of the creations will become part of the Día de los Muertos altar at Headwaters Foundation, while kids will also have artwork to take home. 

October 16 — Community Crafting with Giving Art to Missoula (GAM) at Confluence Center 
Come help us hand-craft paper marigolds that will decorate the community altar at the November 1 celebration! We will be convening at the Confluence Center at 119 W Main St, from 3:30pm-5:30pm. 

October 26 through November 1 — Bring Your Ofrenda 
One of the ways people honor loved ones during Día de los Muertos is by placing photographs, mementos, favorite foods, flowers, and other meaningful items on an ofrenda. If you’d like to remember someone special as part of our community altar, you’re invited to drop off photos, mementos, or other small ofrenda items (5″ x 7″ or smaller) in the collection bins at the front desk of Confluence Center (119 West Main Street) or at the back of the building. Items will be placed on the community altar for the November 1 celebration and will remain on display through November 2. 

November 1 — Celebration, 12pm–8pm 
Come celebrate with us! View the community altar, learn more about the traditions of Día de los Muertos, and spend the afternoon and evening with music, food, art, and activities for all ages. The celebration will stretch along the entire alley of the 100 W block, between Front and Main streets. You’ll find: 

• Live Latin music from DJ Big Lou 

• Latin food and beverage vendors: Deli Arepa, La Catrina Marigold, Miri’s Tacos, Beverly’s Desserts, and more 

• Día de los Muertos–themed face painting 

• Crafts and activities for all ages 

November 2 — Altar Remains Up 
The community altar will remain on display through November 2, the traditional day of observance for Día de los Muertos. Stop by Confluence Center to spend a little more time with the altar and the memories shared by our community.

¡El Día de los Muertos regresa a Confluence Center!

Todos, una vez más abrimos las puertas de Confluence Center para celebrar el Día de los Muertos con nuestros vecinos en Missoula. Esta celebración es dirigida y creada por un comité de miembros de la comunidad Latine que ayudan a dar forma a las tradiciones, actividades y experiencia durante todo el evento.

El Día de los Muertos es una tradición mexicana que honra y recuerda a los seres queridos que han fallecido. Las familias y comunidades crean ofrendas, o altares, llenos de fotografías, flores, comida y otros objetos significativos para dar la bienvenida y recordar a quienes vinieron antes que nosotros. Te invitamos a unirte a nosotros para celebrar esta rica tradición, una puerta abierta para experimentar la cultura latina, compartir en comunidad y construir juntos un sentido de pertenencia.

Únete a nosotros en esta tradición, haz arte, comparte comida y música, y crea una ofrenda juntos. Hay muchas formas de participar, desde hacer decoraciones hasta contribuir al altar comunitario o unirte a nosotros en la celebración del 1 de noviembre:

15 de octubre — Día de Arte para Niños del Día de los Muertos en Zootown Arts Community Center: Obtén más información y regístrate aquí.

Únete al ZACC para un taller especial del Día de los Muertos que explora el arte y las tradiciones detrás del papel picado y las flores de papel de china. Guiados por una familia de Manzanillo, Colima, y un mexicoamericano de primera generación con raíces oaxaqueñas, los niños aprenderán a hacer estas coloridas decoraciones mientras escuchan sobre su historia y simbolismo. Muchas de las creaciones formarán parte del altar del Día de los Muertos en Headwaters Foundation, y los niños también se llevarán a casa sus propias obras de arte.

16 de octubre — Manualidades comunitarias con Giving Art to Missoula (GAM) en Confluence Center

¡Ven a ayudarnos a elaborar a mano flores de cempasúchil de papel que decorarán el altar comunitario en la celebración del 1 de noviembre! Nos reuniremos en Confluence Center, 119 W Main St, de 3:30pm a 5:30pm.

26 de octubre al 1 de noviembre — Trae tu ofrenda

Una de las formas en que las personas honran a sus seres queridos durante el Día de los Muertos es colocando fotografías, recuerdos, comidas favoritas, flores y otros objetos significativos en una ofrenda. Si deseas recordar a alguien especial como parte de nuestro altar comunitario, te invitamos a dejar fotos, recuerdos u otros pequeños objetos de ofrenda (de 5″ x 7″ o más pequeños) en los contenedores de recolección en la recepción de Confluence Center, 119 West Main Street, o en la parte trasera del edificio. Los artículos se colocarán en el altar comunitario para la celebración del 1 de noviembre y permanecerán en exhibición hasta el 2 de noviembre.

1 de noviembre — Celebración, 12pm–8pm

¡Ven a celebrar con nosotros! Ve el altar comunitario, aprende más sobre las tradiciones del Día de los Muertos, y pasa la tarde y la noche con música, comida, arte y actividades para todas las edades. La celebración se extenderá por todo el callejón de la cuadra 100 W, entre las calles Front y Main. Encontrarás:

• Música latina en vivo con DJ Big Lou
• Vendedores de comida y bebidas latinas: Deli Arepa, La Catrina Marigold, Miri’s Tacos, Beverly’s Desserts, y más
• Pintura de rostros con temática del Día de los Muertos
• Manualidades y actividades para todas las edades

2 de noviembre — El altar permanece en exhibición

El altar comunitario permanecerá en exhibición hasta el 2 de noviembre, el día tradicional de conmemoración del Día de los Muertos. Pasa por Confluence Center para pasar un poco más de tiempo con el altar y los recuerdos compartidos por nuestra comunidad.
