Statement on Overturning of Roe v. Wade

As a foundation dedicated to improving health in Western Montana, we resource a variety of programs for Montanans and their families related to childcare, food access, mental health, community organizing, and much more. We believe that access to a full spectrum of services, which includes reproductive care and abortion, are essential to the wellbeing of Montanans. In our perspective, the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is detrimental to our communities. The autonomy to decide whether and when to have children is foundational to the physical, mental and financial health of women and their families. The impact of any limitation on this autonomy will be felt twofold by those who are more vulnerable due to economic and racial inequality, and we fear that this ruling may pave the way to more barriers to health for all Montanans including women, people of color and the LGBTQ community.

We will be closely watching what happens on this issue in our state. We are committed to continuing to support Montana women and families through funding services and supporting efforts to amplify the voices of those most impacted. For information and tangible ways to take action, we suggest signing up for Montana Women Vote’s action alerts. MWV is a Headwaters grantee and we are inspired by their work with low-income women and families, folks in the LGBTQ community, Native women, and their allies, to fight for health care access, reproductive rights, economic justice, and violence prevention.
